What do you look for in the best confinement food in Singapore?
A mum’s body takes a real beating when she gives birth, which means the best confinement food in Singapore has to be able to help her recover. Confinement meals aren’t just to get new mothers back on their feet, but also to sustain them as they breastfeed and care for baby.
That means that confinement food has to be rich in iron and protein which will help mum make up for all that blood loss during delivery and postpartum recovery. Iron and protein-rich food includes
- Red meat like beef, lamb, and pork
- Poultry like chicken, turkey, or duck
- Seafood like sardines, salmon, or mackerel
- Dark leafy greens like spinach or broccoli and legumes
- Raisins, prunes, and other dried fruit
- Soya or tofu, brown rice, nuts, and seeds
Fish is particularly good not just for its protein content but also for helping to keep postpartum depression at bay. Food rich in vitamin C will help you absorb all that iron better, and that means fruits like oranges, mangoes, and strawberries, and vegetables like tomatoes and red or green bell peppers.
You’ll also need your confinement meals to be rich in calcium and vitamin D, which means milk, yoghurt, or cheese — and you can look for all these and more in the following confinement food delivery services in Singapore here.

FAQs
What exactly is the “confinement period”?
In Chinese culture, the confinement period is 30 days of postnatal recovery, during which time new mothers aren’t allowed to eat “cold” (i.e., bitter or sour, not “cool”) or “yin” food (as opposed to “warm” or “yang” food). Eating traditional Chinese confinement food during this period is meant to promote a speedy recovery and boost breast milk supply with food like pig’s trotters and green papaya. Food such as red dates, sesame oil, and goji berries also help mums to compensate for blood loss.
Should you eat more after giving birth?
Actually, you should, especially if you are breastfeeding, because what you eat will affect the milk you produce in terms of amount and quality. You’re going to need an extra 500 kilocalories to make sure you get the nutrients you need while you nurse, and if you put on any extra weight before you gave birth, all those extra calories are going to go to your breastmilk until baby is six months old.
If you lost this extra weight after giving birth, you’re going to need 400 to 500 calories more, every day. But don’t worry — as soon as baby starts on solid food at six months, you’ll produce less milk and you can cut back on those calories.
What about herbs and spices?
Herbs and spices for aiding postpartum recovery are practically universal across cultures, with garlic and ginger being among the most popular. These two are great for keeping inflammation under control and boosting your immunity. Curcumin, saffron, fenugreek, and other Indian herbs are considered helpful for keeping postpartum depression at bay. Interestingly, eating different herbs and spices can change your breastmilk flavour, so they can keep things interesting for your baby, too.
Can you have food that has alcohol or caffeine?
Chinese confinement traditions regard alcohol as useful for keeping your body “warm” and getting rid of “cold”. However, alcohol still shows up in a mum’s breastmilk some three hours after drinking or eating food with alcohol in it. Best to stay on the safe side and avoid alcohol completely while nursing.
The same goes for caffeine, as it doesn’t take long for it to show up in your breast milk after you have coffee, tea, or soda. Caffeine can make it harder for baby to fall asleep, and put your precious little one in a bad mood, so better forego the cuppajoe until baby is weaned from the breast.
