What You Should Know About Gillman Barracks

Gillman Barracks is a former British Army camp off Alexandra Road. It was built in the 1930s. Today the colonial blocks hold art galleries, bars, cafés and restaurants.

The restaurants sit along two roads: Malan Road and Lock Road. Everything is within a five-minute walk, so you can eat at one place and drink at another.

When You Should Go

Weekday lunch is quiet. Most bars get busy on Friday and Saturday nights. Weekend mornings suit brunch at Wheeler’s Tropikana or coffee at Kyuukei.

Many galleries close on Mondays. Some restaurants do too, including Wheeler’s Tropikana. Special events like Art After Dark draw bigger crowds and run later.

• Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk between blocks on sloped paths.
• Bring an umbrella. Some walkways are open to the sun and rain.
• Book ahead for Friday and Saturday dinner, especially at Naked Finn and Hopscotch.

• By MRT: Labrador Park (Circle Line) is nearest. Take Exit A and follow the sheltered walkway. It takes about 11 minutes.
• By bus: Services 51, 61, 93, 97, 100, 120, 166 and 963 stop opposite Alexandra Point. Walk about 10 minutes from there.
• By car: Enter via Malan Road or Lock Road. On-site parking is limited. There is more parking at Alexandra Retail Centre.

Little Island Brewing Co. (LIBC) opened at Gillman Barracks in March 2024. It sits in an old warehouse called The Southern Depot. Beer comes from 20 copper taps, and the kitchen makes wood-fired sourdough pizzas.
