FAQs

What are the eligibility requirements when applying for a petrol credit card in Singapore?

You usually have to be at least 21 years old to get a petrol credit card, and be making at least S$30,000 a year if you’re a Singaporean or Permanent Resident, and at least S$45,000 to S$60,000 (depending on the bank) per year if you’re a foreigner. You’ll need to have your Singpass account, Myinfo details, and updated income records ready before you apply.

The documents you’ll need to prepare include a front and back copy of your NRIC, your computerised payslips from the last three months (in Singapore dollars), and a statement with your CPF contributions for the last 12 months. You’ll also need bank statements showing your salary credited to your account from the last three months (also in Singapore dollars), a copy of your staff pass, and a fully signed letter of appointment from your HR department. It’s also a good idea to have your latest Income Tax Notices of Assessment from the last one or two years.

Is it better to use a petrol credit card or a debit card when refuelling?

One works as well as the other, although a petrol credit card works harder in that it comes with credit card discounts and other attractive rewards. The best credit cards also act as a petrol loyalty card which lets you earn loyalty points for the petrol service stations you go to the most. Credit cards are also more secure in terms of fraud protection and being able to get your money back in case of unauthorised transactions.

Should I get a petrol credit card as an addition or replace one of my existing credit cards?

Knowing which credit cards to get to suit your lifestyle is one of those credit card hacks that allow you to make the most of your credit. A rule of thumb is to have one “everything” credit card that you generally use, and a “specific” credit card for things you know you spend on more than others. If you know your petrol consumption is particularly high, having a credit card specifically for petrol would be a savvy addition to your existing cards if the credit cards you have are more “everything” in nature.
